TERRAZZO

Terrazzo flooring has a long and rich history that dates back over 1500 years.  The word Terrazzo originated from the Italian word for “terraces.” It was created purely by chance by Venetian marble workers.  During the 15th-century workers discovered a new use for discarded chips from slab marble.  They began setting odd size marble pieces from paying jobs in clay to surface the terraces around their own homes.  The results were amazing.  Throughout time, the process evolved and we now use glass, granite and quartz along with marble chips.

The combination of beauty, durability and low maintenance has led to a renaissance in the use of terrazzo over the past decade. Today, terrazzo flooring continues to provide the ultimate in durability and low maintenance, typically lasting the life of the building.

TERRAZZO TODAY

Terrazzo is a poured in place, seamless hard surface finish. Most commonly used as an interior flooring finish but can also be precast into terrazzo treads, base or wall panels and even countertops and sinks. Epoxy terrazzo flooring has a total finished thickness of just 3/8" and is composed to two main components: a binder resin and aggregate.

Epoxy binder resin offer exceptional compressive, tensile and flexural strenght and contains no VOC so it will not affect indoor air quality during or after consturcion. The epoxy resin is colored just like paint. Light or dark base material is seclected and then pigment is adding accordingly. We can match any paint or pantone color. Binder resin represents approximatly 30% of the by weight.

RESIN

70% of the terrazzo is composed of crushed aggregrate or chips. There is a wide variety of aggregrate options such as marble, granite, recycled glass, porcelain, concrete or metal that offer a wide variety of colors. Aggregrate is also available in avariety of different sizes.

AGGREGATES

Divider strips offer both form and function. They are used to create the form to retain the poured terrazzo mix. Astethetically, dividers serve as the skeleton to the terrazzo flooring design, offering designers the ability to create custom designs and patterns. The thickness of the terrazzo strips may be varied to compliment the flooring design. The divider strip can be as apparent or discrete as your design requires. Strips are also offered in differtent materials, most commonly aluminum as well as zinc, brass or plastic. Divider strips also function to control cracking and should be placed in accordance with NTMA Technical Bulletin T-24.
